How pickleball scoring works
Pickleball games are normally played to 11 points, win by 2, and a match is best of three games (some tournaments play to 15 or 21). There are two common ways to count points:
Traditional (side-out) scoring
Only the serving side can score. If the receiving side wins the rally, they win the serve instead of a point — a side-out. This is the classic format you will see in most recreational play.
Rally scoring
A point is scored on every rally, no matter who served. It makes game length more predictable and is used in some leagues and newer formats.
However you play, tap the serving side (or the rally winner) to add a point, use Switch serve to move the serve on a side-out, and the scoreboard calls the game the moment a side reaches the target with a two-point lead.

How does pickleball scoring work?
In traditional (side-out) scoring, only the serving side can score a point. If the receiving side wins the rally they do not get a point — they win the serve instead (a side-out). In the newer rally scoring format, a point is awarded on every rally regardless of who served.
Who serves first in pickleball?
The starting server is usually decided by a coin toss or a rally. In doubles, the very first service turn of the game only has one server; after that, both players on a side serve before a side-out. Use the "Switch serve" button to keep the serving side marked on the scoreboard.
